About Union Church

The Union Church of San Juan was founded in 1917 by members of the Methodist and Presbyterian denominations. It was the culmination of a two year dialogue in which these persons explored the possibility of an inter-denominational protestant English speaking congregation. The church was originally located on Miramar Street in San Juan.

Much of the early history of the Union Church is a story of faithful people helping “continentals” adjust to life in Puerto Rico. Through the 30’s and 40’s there was extensive growth. So much that when the opportunity to move to the Isla Verde location on Calle Laurel presented itself in the 1960’s, the congregation did not hesitate. That move to Isla Verde was confirmed with another period of tremendous growth. So much growth so that 1972 a daughter church, Second Union Church was born. Union Church has been a leader in two areas of ministry. The first is helping new English speaking residents to Puerto Rico find a spiritual home and the support needed to make a sometimes difficult transition possible. Another area of ministry is answering the call to serve all the people who populate our community whether or not they attend our church. Union Church has forged a partnership with the municipality of San Juan by being the sponsoring organization for six Head Start centers. Our commitment to these littlest learners is a living out of our faith.

As Union Church enters the 21st century we cannot know where God will lead us. We do know that faithfulness to Christ and commitment to service will place us in the middle of God’s work in Puerto Rico.
